The Comic Book SyndiCon is ecstatic to announce our Special Guest who is a rarity at comic con.
Bob Budiansky is the writer of Marvel Comics’ Transformers comic book. He is attributed as the creator of many of the character names and mythos from that world including Megatron, the Dinobots, Sideswipe, Wheeljack, and countless others. He also wrote all of the ‘tech spec’ cards that came with every Transformers toy.
Budiansky’s stories often focused on characters that were marginalized in the cartoon and often focused on Shockwave, Ratchet, Grimlock and Ratbat. He also wrote stories featuring Skids, Bumblebee and Blaster.
“I was the one that Hasbro came to come up with new names, new profiles. I wrote the copy for their packaging, for all those toys that came out. Well, I’m not sure about all of those toys, but for most of those toys that came out in that five-year period from late 1983 through early 1989, I was heavily involved in developing all that material.”
‘Mega’ to me, meant ‘Megaton’ as in nuclear bombs, so it had that kind of sinister, dangerous connotation. And ‘Tron’ was just the obvious technological suffix, you know from electronics and so on. So I just combined ‘Megaton’ and ‘Tron,’ a little twist on the word ‘Megaton,’ really, and made ‘Megatron.’
Budiansky was also the artist on Ghost Rider in 1973 (#68 to #81), and is the creator of Sleepwalker.
